How To Optimize a Website for Search Engines

What is SEO or Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization or search engine marketing is the process of improving a website's rankings in search engines like Google, Yahoo!, or MSN, just to name the three biggest ones. There are many aspects that need to be considered in order to achieve the best potential search engine rankings for a specific website.

In order to optimize a website for search engines, one must first understand how search algorithms work and what potential visitors to your site might be seeking. Search engines send out so called "robots" or "spider" programs to evaluate websites for their relevance and importance. These automated programs do not see a website the same way a regular visitor does. Robots or spiders read through the website's source code and evaluate the relevancy of a site's content to a specific keyword or keyword combination. They accomplish this through a complicated process that takes into account all of the words contained in the source code, the link structure, the amount of pages within a site, the meta tags, and other criteria.

Websites often do not rank well in search engines due to source code related problems, errors, or simply because the web site developer used the wrong technology. For example: While a Flash site might be nice to look at, most search engines can not index Flash sites. What's the point of building a great-looking website if nobody can find it?

Ideally, you should begin thinking about search engine optimization when you are planning and building a website in order to guarantee a search-engine-friendly and user-friendly site.

If you already own a website and aspects of search engine optimization were not considered when the site was built, it might be a bit difficult to optimize the site for search engines. The entire source code may even need to be re-written. However, this is a very worthwhile investment, since visitors who find your site through a search engine are considered "high-value traffic".
